A device that efficiently burns fuel gas to produce heat and high temperatures. Burners range from small-scale burners such as laboratory Bunsen burners and household stoves to large-scale industrial burners used in boilers at thermal power plants. The principle was invented in 1855 by RW Bunsen of Germany. Fuel gas is forcefully ejected from a nozzle (small hole) and primary air is sucked in through an air hole, and ignition and combustion occur when the two are well mixed. This principle is applied to household gas stoves and instantaneous water heater burners. In contrast, large-scale, practical industrial burners are of the diffusion type, in which fuel gas and air are sent separately to the combustor, where they are mixed in a vortex and burned.

燃料ガスを効率的に燃焼させ，熱や高温を取り出す装置。実験室用のブンゼンバーナーや家庭用こんろなどの小規模なバーナーから，火力発電所のボイラーで用いられる工業用の大規模なバーナーまである。原理は1855年ドイツのR.W.ブンゼンが考案。燃料ガスをノズル（小孔）から勢いよく吹き出させて空気孔から一次空気を吸い込ませ，両者がよく混ざったところで点火し燃焼させる。この原理は，家庭用ガスこんろや瞬間湯沸器のバーナーなどに応用されている。これに対し，工業用の大規模で実用的なバーナーは，燃料ガスと空気を別々に燃焼器に送り，燃焼器内で渦状に混合させて燃焼を行う拡散型のものである。
