? ‐268 Emperor of the Gallic Empire, a separate state within the Roman Empire. He held important military positions under Emperor Gallienus, but in 259 he falsely claimed the throne in Gaul, usurping the region and ruling it until 268. His troops were on the Rhine border and stopped Germanic invasions, which ultimately helped restore order to the western part of the Roman Empire. In putting down a rebellion in Mainz, he occupied the town, but was killed by the army. [Motomura Ryoji] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
