A village in Kitakanbara County, northern Niigata Prefecture. Population 6,534 (1995). The village is made up of an alluvial fan on the north bank of the Tainai River, a mountain basin upstream, and the Iide Mountains. The village has produced oil since ancient times, and the entry for July in the 7th year of Tenchi (668) in the Nihon Shoki states that "fueled soil and fuel water were presented from the Echigo region," which is said to refer to this local oil. The village's name is said to come from the fact that the river turned black due to kusozu (crude oil). Rice is cultivated on the alluvial fan around the central Kurokawa River, and tobacco, shiitake mushrooms, and nameko mushrooms are cultivated and livestock are raised in the mountains, and these products are also processed.
