It grows in mountainous areas, and its leaves resemble those of rowan, but it is a deciduous shrub of the Rosaceae family that is closely related to the genus Spiraea. Its Japanese name means "spike-blooming rowan." It grows to a height of about 2m. The leaves are alternate and pinnately compound. There are 6-10 pairs of leaflets, which are lanceolate, 4-10cm long, and have sawtooth edges. It flowers in July and August, and the inflorescence is large, with many flowers that have five circular petals and are 7-8mm in diameter. The stamens are numerous and longer than the petals. The fruit is a capsule that is densely hairy and, unlike rowan, dehisces. It is commonly found in Hokkaido, and also grows in central and northern Honshu.
