Cotton, John

Japanese: コットン(英語表記)Cotton, John
Cotton, John
Born: 4 December 1585, Derby
Died: December 23, 1652, Boston. A Puritan leader in the New England colony. In 1633, he moved to Boston to escape the persecution of nonconformists in England. He became a teacher at the First Church in Boston and became a leading figure in the religion and politics of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. In a dispute with R. Williams, he argued that the authority of magistrates extended not only to secular matters but also to religious matters, and expelled Williams and A. Hutchinson. His catechism, Milk for Babes (1646), became the standard textbook for children in New England. His other works include The Keys of the Kingdom of Heaven (44), The Way of the Churches of Christ in New England (45), and The Way of the Congregational Churches Cleared (48). He became increasingly reactionary in his later years.
