A passerine bird of the Corvidae family (illustration). Total length is about 35 cm. The body is blackish brown with dense white spots on the face, back, and underside. The name Nutcracker comes from the fine white spots on the body. The lower tail cover and the tips of the tail feathers are white. It is distributed in the subarctic and subalpine zones of Eurasia, mainly living in coniferous forests. In Japan, it breeds in the coniferous forest zone and the pumila zone at altitudes of about 1,500 m or more in Hokkaido, Honshu, and Shikoku, and some species come down to the low mountain zone in winter. It cries in a hoarse voice, and also makes a strange sound called "meow," which sounds similar to a cat's voice.
