...Daemons are all the forces that modern people would define as operating in the unconscious. Thus, originally, they were not necessarily associated with evil, and although there are still positive aspects, such as in the German word dämonisch, which is used as a characteristic of a genius personality, with the rise of Christianity, pagan gods were rejected, and daemons came to be identified with demons and devils. In Christian theology, which takes a dualistic stance of good and evil along with Zoroastrianism, Judaism, and Islam, a hierarchy of evil is conceived in correspondence with the hierarchy of good constituted by gods and angels, and demons were organized exclusively within the latter.
