Branch tone - Edajoushi

Japanese: 枝調子 - えだぢょうし

A term used in gagaku scale theory. In Tang Dynasty music, a tuning was incorporated into one of the six tunings because the tones that make up the melody are slightly different but the tonic tone is the same. The Ryumeisho lists seven tunings: Seicho, Docho, Suicho, Kotsujikicho, Sadacho, Churyocho, and Koishicho. Currently, traces of this tuning can only be found in the tuning of Sadacho, a branch tuning of Ichikotsucho, and the tuning of Suicho, a branch tuning of Oushikicho, for the koto and biwa.

雅楽の音階理論用語。唐楽曲において，旋律を構成する音は多少異なるが主音が同じであるために，六調子のなかのいずれかの調子に組入れられた調子。『竜名抄』には，性調 (せいちょう) ，道 (どう) 調，水 (すい) 調，乞食 (こつじき) 調，沙陀 (さだ) 調，中呂 (ちゅうりょ) 調，小石 (食) 調の七調があげられている。現在では『陵王』の音取 (ねとり) として，壱越 (いちこつ) 調の枝調子である沙陀調の音取と，箏と琵琶に黄鐘 (おうしき) 調の枝調子である水調の調弦にのみ，その痕跡がみられる。
