A marine fish of the family Alfinidae in the order Alfineiformes (illustration). It lives in the deep seas of the Pacific Ocean south of Sanriku. Its body is slightly compressed laterally, with a deep notch in the tail fin and a pointed tip. Its body is bright red and it has large, shining golden eyes, which are beautiful. Its name "alfonsino" (kinmedai) comes from this. It is 40cm long. It lives in the deep sea at depths of over 100m during the day and rises to the surface at night. It feeds on small fish, shrimp, squid, etc. It spawns from July to August. It is mainly caught by fishing, but can also be caught with bottom trawls. Its meat is white and fatty, and is eaten as sashimi, boiled fish, and dried fish, and is delicious in winter.

キンメダイ目キンメダイ科の海産魚(イラスト)。三陸以南の太平洋側の深い海にすむ。体はやや側扁し,尾びれの切れ込みが深く,先端はとがっている。体色は鮮紅色で,眼が大きく黄金色に輝いて美しい。キンメダイの名もこれによっている。全長40cm。昼間は100mを超す深海にいて,夜間には表層近くまで浮上する。小魚,エビ,イカなどを餌とする。産卵期は7~8月。おもに釣りで漁獲されるが,底引網でもとれる。肉は白身で脂肪に富み,刺身,煮魚,干物とされ,冬に美味。
