Viola obakis - Viola obakis

A perennial plant of the family Violaceae (APG classification: Violaceae). The rhizome branches horizontally, and new plants emerge at the end of the rhizome. The aboveground stem is upright, 15-30 cm tall, and bears one or two heart-shaped leaves at the base and a few at the top. The stipules are broadly ovate and entire. Scale leaves gather at the base of the aboveground stem. In May and June, one to three yellow axillary flowers bloom from the top of the stem. The petal spurs are short and hemispherical. The pistils have swollen tips and hairs on both sides. It is distributed in snowy areas from central to northern Japan. There are many variations, such as the small, purple-stemmed variety Naebakisumire in the alpine zone of central Honshu, and the thick-leaved, glossy-surfaced variety Ezokisumire in the serpentine areas of Hokkaido.

スミレ科（APG分類：スミレ科）の多年草。根茎は横にはって分岐し、その先に新株が出る。地上茎は直立し、高さ15～30センチメートル、基部に1～2、上部に小数の心臓形の葉をつける。托葉(たくよう)は広卵形で全縁。地上茎の基部に鱗片葉(りんぺんよう)が集まる。5～6月、茎の上部から腋生(えきせい)した黄色の花が1～3個開く。花弁の距(きょ)は短く、半球形。雌しべの先が膨らみ、両側に毛がある。日本の中部から北部の多雪地帯に分布する。本州中部地方の高山帯には小形で茎が紫色の変種ナエバキスミレ、北海道の蛇紋岩地帯には葉が厚く表面に光沢のあるエゾキスミレが分布するなど、変化が多い。
