American actor. Born in New York. He started out as a stage manager, then appeared in films from 1930. He was well-received for his role as a gangster in the film adaptation of "Petrified Forest" (1936), which he played in the same role as in the stage play, and then moved to the role of a hard-boiled detective in "The Maltese Falcon" (1941). He became a leading star after "Casablanca" in 1942. He gained popularity with his unique, bitter face and voice, and in 1945 he married actress Lauren Bacall (1924-2014), with whom he co-starred in "Deliverance" (1944), and won the Academy Award for Best Actor in "The African Queen" in 1951. Even after his death, he is nicknamed "Bogie" and his popularity is increasing. His representative works include "Tank Regiment" (1943), "Trojan Horse" (1948), "Mutiny on the Caine" (1953), "Barefoot Countess" (1954), "We Are No Angels" and "Desperate Fugitive" (both 1955).
