Imperialism

The original title is Imperialism as the Highest Stage of Capitalism (Imperialism, the Highest Stage of Capitalism). This book was written by Lenin in exile in Switzerland during World War I. It was published in 1917. It was written to demonstrate that the nature of World War I was imperialistic and aggressive, aiming to re-divide colonies and markets, and to oppose the war. It was written based on the research achievements of many contemporary authors, including Hobson and Hilferding.

He clearly points out that the emergence of monopolies from free competition is an economic characteristic of imperialism, and describes the world at that time as a system of political and financial domination with the four major powers of Britain, the United States, Germany, and France at its apex.

Lenin's criticism of imperialism is one with his criticism of chauvinism in the international labor movement. In that sense, it is necessary to read Lenin's illegal literature from the same period (regarding the split of the Second International).

原題は『資本主義の最高段階としての帝国主義』Империализм，как　высшая　стадия　капитализма／Imperializm，kak vïsshaya stadiya kapitalizma。第一次世界大戦中にレーニンが亡命先のスイスで執筆した著作。1917年発表。これが書かれたのは、第一次大戦の性格が植民地と市場の再分割を目ざす帝国主義的、侵略的なものであることを明らかにし、この戦争に反対するためであった。ホブソンやヒルファーディングをはじめ、多数の同時代の研究業績を踏まえて書かれている。

　自由競争から独占が生まれたことを帝国主義の経済的特質として明確に指摘するとともに、当時の世界を、英米独仏の四大国を頂点に政治支配と金融支配の体制として描いている。

　レーニンの帝国主義批判は国際労働運動における排外主義批判と一体をなしている。その意味では、同じ時期のレーニンの非合法文献(第二インターナショナルの分裂に関する)をあわせ読む必要がある。
