陳列販売，見本販売などと並ぶ物品販売の一形態。古くは富山の薬売りで知られる家庭常備薬の販売などの行商が主であったが，第2次世界大戦後，所得向上による購買力の向上から，直接，客と顔を見合す販売法として注目され，自動車，化粧品，各種薬品，書籍，保険，証券などの訪問販売が普及した。百貨店にも高級品を訪問販売するところが出てきた。この販売法の強みは，客が欲しいと思う商品あるいは見本を実際に見せ，説明し，納得ずくで買ってもらえることである。この訪問販売は無店舗販売としても位置づけられ，その設備投資分だけ販売コストは削減されるが，大量のセールスマンが必要とされる。歩合制の給与体系を部分的に導入している企業が多く，人件費圧力を圧縮し，販売能率を高めている。訪問販売では商品力とともにセールス担当者の資質が問われるため，商品知識や販売技術などの社員研修が重要となっている。
