Zokki book - Zokkibon

A slang term for discounted books. It is also called mikirihon or kazumono (few books). It is said to have descended from the jihon wholesalers of the Edo period, but from around 1902 (Meiji 35), wholesalers specializing in mikirihon appeared, and they were sold at bookstores, street stalls, hardware stores, and on board vehicles. Items included popular books, picture books, practical dictionaries, calendars, and magazines that were out of date a month, and those that were made with a special price in mind from the start were called "tsukurihon." The origin of the word "zokki" is said to come from "soguru" (to kill) or "sokkuri" (to look like), but there is no consensus.

特価書籍の俗称。ほかに見切本、数物(かずもの)などともいう。江戸時代の地本問屋の流れをくむというが、1902年（明治35）ごろより見切本専門の卸商が発生し、書店のほか、露店、荒物店、乗り物内などで売られた。品目としては、大衆読物、絵本、実用辞典、暦、月遅れ雑誌などがあり、最初から特価を前提につくられたものを「つくり本」という。「ぞっき」の語源は「殺(そ)ぐ」からとか「そっくり」からとかいわれるが、定説はない。
