The capital of Foggia Province in Puglia, southern Italy. Population: 146,072 (2001 census preliminary figure). It is the center of the Tavoliere plain, the largest grain-producing region in the Italian peninsula (3,000 km2). In addition to hard wheat, it produces grapes, olives, almonds, tobacco, and food processing. It originated in the 11th century, but the current city was rebuilt after the great earthquake of 1731.
