A perennial plant of the Caryophyllaceae family found throughout Japan. It is also commonly grown as a weed around urban areas. It resembles chickweed overall, but is large, with stems reaching 40-50cm in height. The stem branches well, but ends in a flower at the tip, and because side branches appear in the axils of the opposite leaves at the base, it appears to be bifurcated. The leaves are sessile, clasping the stem at the base, triangular-ovate, 3-4cm long, entire, and more than twice as large as chickweed. The flowers are white, five-petaled, and appear singly at the tips of the branches, drooping after flowering to become capsules.
