A village in Kitasaitama County, northeastern Saitama Prefecture. Population 8,077 (1995). Occupying lowlands sandwiched between Motoarakawa River and Hoshikawa River (Minumadai Irrigation Canal). In the paddy field area, in addition to rice cultivation, vegetables, flowers, and pears are produced, pig farming is also carried out, and seedling raising is also thriving. Although part-time work is becoming more common, the proportion of people engaged in agriculture is high in the prefecture. Kusunuma Numa, located at the southern end, was used as a dug-up rice field, but is now a golf course that doubles as a flood control basin. 埼玉県北東部,北埼玉郡の村。人口8077(1995)。元荒川と星川(見沼代用水)にはさまれた低地を占める。水田地帯で,米作のほか野菜や花卉,梨の生産,養豚などが行われ,育苗も盛ん。兼業化が進んでいるが,農業従事者の割合は県下では高い。南端にあった屈巣(くす)沼は掘上げ田として使われていたが,現在は遊水池をかねたゴルフ場となっている。【千葉 立也】
