Square inch

A literary and artistic magazine from the end of the Meiji period. From May 1907 (Meiji 40) to July 1911. 35 volumes in total. Published by Hosunsha. At first, the cover and cover were eight pages long, then 12 pages, and later 16 pages. It was first published as a coterie magazine by young Western-style painters from the Taiheiyo Gakai group, Ishii Hakutei, Morita Tsunetomo, and Yamamoto Kanae. In the second year, Kurata Hakuyo, Kosugi Misei (Hoan), and Hirafuku Hyakusui joined the coterie, and in the third year, Oda Kazuma and Sakamoto Hanjiro joined. As an art magazine, it published a wide variety of lithographs and woodblock prints by each artist, in addition to exhibition reviews, art essays, and art comics. At the same time, it opened its doors to people outside the coterie, and promoted exchanges with literature in particular. The main contributors were Hakushu Kitahara, Mokutaro Kinoshita, and Kotaro Takamura. The final issue was a memorial to Shigeru Aoki, who passed away in March of that year. A reprint edition (1972-73, Sansaisha) is available.

明治末期の美術文芸誌。1907年（明治40）5月～11年7月。全35冊。方寸社発行。初め表紙とも八ページ、やがて12ページから、後期には16ページとなる。太平洋画会系の青年洋画家、石井柏亭(はくてい)、森田恒友(つねとも)、山本鼎(かなえ)による同人制雑誌として創刊、2年目から倉田白羊(はくよう)、小杉未醒(みせい)（放庵(ほうあん)）、平福百穂(ひらふくひゃくすい)、3年目から織田一磨(おだかずま)、坂本繁二郎(はんじろう)が同人に加わっている。美術誌としては展覧会評、画論、芸術漫画のほか、各画家の自画自刷による石版画、木版画を豊富に発表。かたわら、同人以外にも門戸を開き、とくに文学との交流を図った。おもな寄稿者に、北原白秋(はくしゅう)、木下杢太郎(もくたろう)、高村光太郎(こうたろう)がいる。なお終刊号は、その年の3月に没した「青木繁(しげる)追悼号」である。復刻版（1972～73・三彩社）がある。
