This storage battery uses nickel oxide hydroxide NiO(OH) as the anode active material, cadmium Cd as the cathode active material, and potassium hydroxide KOH as the electrolyte, and is a typical alkaline battery. The charge and discharge reactions are: and the overall reaction is:. Based on the type of plate, they are divided into Jungner type (Jungner battery) and sintered type (sintered storage battery). Jungner type plates are made by filling active material into nickel-plated perforated steel tubes or pockets and press-forming them. Sintered type plates are made by filling a porous substrate made by sintering carbonyl nickel with cadmium as the active material for the cathode and NiO(OH) as the active material for the anode.

陽極活物質に酸化水酸化ニッケルNiO(OH)，陰極活物質にカドミウムCd，電解液に水酸化カリウムKOHを用いた蓄電池で，代表的なアルカリ電池である。充放電の反応は，で，全反応は，である。　極板の形式からユングナー型(ユングナー電池)と焼結型(焼結式蓄電池)に分かれる。ユングナー型極板は，ニッケルめっきした孔あき鋼板製チューブまたはポケットに活物質を充てんし，加圧成形してつくられる。焼結型極板は，カルボニルニッケルを焼結してつくった多孔質基板中に，陰極の場合にはカドミウムを活物質として充てんし，陽極の場合にはNiO(OH)を活物質として充てんしたものである。
