A village in Asakura County, in the central-eastern part of Fukuoka Prefecture, bordering Oita Prefecture. Population 1,825 (1995). Occupying mountainous land in the upper reaches of the Ohi River, a tributary of the Chikugo River, the town is dominated by Shakagatake (844m), which is linked to Mount Hiko in the north. The main settlement is near Daigyoji Station on the JR Hitahikosan Line, and National Route 211 also passes through the area. Small coal mines belonging to the Asakura coalfield have been in operation since the mid-Meiji period, but they all closed in 1963. Agriculture and forestry are the main industries, but they are small-scale, and the population is increasingly working part-time and aging.
