The literary world developed around the magazine My in the 1960s and 1970s, and the literary magazine Lumir in the 1980s. Neruda, Vitězslav Hálek (1835-74), and Karolína Světlá were active in My, while Čech, Vrchký, Josef Václav Sládek (1845-1912), and Julius Zeyer (1841-1945) were active in Lumir, and they tried to catch up with the level of Western countries. Prose writers of this period included Karel Václav Rais (1859-1926) and Jirásek, who is famous for his historical novels. …
