Antiphon - Antiphon (English spelling)

An ancient Greek orator. He was active in Athens, but sided with the aristocrats in the coup of 411 BC, and was executed when the people won. He rarely gave speeches himself, but gained fame by writing speeches for others. His representative works, the three Tetralogia, are written in a format in which the plaintiff and defendant alternate between giving four speeches in court. Many of his works are model speeches set in fictional cases, but they are well-structured and he is also regarded as having made a great contribution to Attic prose in terms of style.

古代ギリシアの弁論家。アテネで活躍したが、紀元前411年の政変で貴族側にたったため、民衆側の勝利に際して処刑された。自分自身が演説することは少なく、他人のために弁論を書いて名声を得た。代表的作品『テトラロギア』3編は、法廷で原告と被告が交互に合計四つの弁論を行う形式で書かれている。仮想の事件を設定した模範弁論の創作が多いが、弁論の構成がりっぱであり、文体の面でもアッティカ散文を大きく発展させたと評価されている。
