In 1960, as Garibaldi's liberation of southern Italy progressed, he returned to Naples with enthusiasm and devoted himself to political activities. The following year, he was elected to the unified Italian parliament and became the Minister of Education. While he continued to have a passion for political reform throughout his life, he also resumed his active critical activities in 1965, publishing "Collection of Critical Essays" in 1966, "On Petrarch" in 1969, and his main work, "History of Italian Literature," in two volumes from 1970 to 1971. From 1971, he lectured on 19th century Italian literature at the University of Naples to complement "History of Literature," and in his later years, he also enthusiastically engaged in research on naturalistic literature, which was still new at the time. …

His major works include “Culture of the 20th Century” (1934), “Poetry of Hermetism” (1936), and “Essays on Modern Poetics” (1949). However, his most important work is “History of Italian Literature” (5 volumes, first published in 1940, expanded and revised in 1962), which is the culmination of his critical activities and is a major work that can be called a classic of Italian literary history, second only to F. De Sanctis. …
