A type of ape-man. It was named in the late 1970s by American anthropologist DC Johanson and others based on the fossils of primitive ape-men excavated in Afar, Ethiopia and Laetoli, Tanzania. It is considered to be the oldest stage of the Australopithecidae. The female skeleton excavated in Afar, known as Lucy, belongs to this species.
