It is a province located at the western end of Canada. With an area of 948,596 km2, it is the third largest of the 10 provinces in Canada, and its population of 3.77 million (1995) is also the third largest. Its capital is Victoria. The majority of the population is of British descent (67%), but because it faces the Pacific Ocean, there are also many Asian people, with Japanese, Chinese, and Indians making up 4% of the province's total population. The Coast Mountains run north to south in the west of the province, and the Canadian Rocky Mountains run north to south in the east. The inland plateau between them includes fertile, dry agricultural and livestock areas such as the Okanagan Valley. The coastal region is washed by the Kuroshio Current and has the best climate in Canada, and Victoria, the provincial capital, located on Vancouver Island, about an hour by ferry from the mainland, is famous as one of Canada's leading resort areas.
