First World

(1880-1966) Founder of the Fujikage-ryu school. Born in Niigata. Real name Uchida Yae. Became a student of the female actor Ichikawa Kumehachi and took the name Uchida Shizue, but gave up acting. Became a student of Fujima Kan'emon II and was allowed to use the name Fujima Shizue in 1910 (Meiji 43). Became a geisha in Shinbashi and married Nagai Kafu in 1914 (Taisho 3), but the marriage ended the following year. In 1917, she founded the Toin Society and was active as a pioneer of the new dance movement. She also performed in Paris in 1929 (Showa 4), introducing orthodox Japanese dance to Europe for the first time. In 1956, she gave up her Fujima family name and founded the Fujikage school, becoming head of the school, Fujikage Shizue. In 1957 (Showa 32), she handed the name Shizue to Miyoe, a disciple of the founder, and took the name Fujikage Shizuki, becoming head of the school the following year. However, she ended up parting ways with the second Shizue. In 1981, she was awarded the Person of Cultural Merit. She is known for her many original dance pieces, including "Shibon," "Jashinonri," "Kariteimo," and "Ochofujin."

II

Sakae Fujikage (1926-) took the name in 1998 and became the head of the school. The founder's niece, Seiho of the same school, took the name Shizue II, and so the name Shizue was used in two schools.

The other second-generation Shizue took the name Fujikage Seiki in 1997, and Fujima Monruri took on the name of the third-generation head of the school, Fujikage Shizue.
