A research institute established in July 1957 as an affiliated institution of the Science and Technology Agency (at that time) to conduct research on radiation-induced damage to the human body, as well as its prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, and on the medical use of radiation. It is currently an independent administrative institution under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. It comprehensively pursues issues related to radiation-induced damage to the human body from a wide range of fields, including physics, chemistry, biology, and medicine, and also conducts research on technologies for diagnosing and treating diseases, including cancer, using radioisotopes and various radiation generators. It offers various training courses and trains engineers in radiation protection and the medical use of radiation. It is located in Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture, and has a Nakaminato branch office in Hitachinaka City, Ibaraki Prefecture. Chiba City is equipped with facilities and equipment for animal experiments on radiation damage, as well as various radiation generators including a cyclotron. It also has the Charged Particle Medical Science Center Hospital, which conducts clinical research and heavy ion radiotherapy. Hitachinaka City has facilities and equipment for conducting ecological research on the behavior of radioactive materials in the environment.

放射線による人体の障害並びにその予防，診断および治療に関する調査研究，放射線の医学的利用に関する調査研究などを行うために，科学技術庁（当時）の付属機関として，1957年７月に発足した研究機関。現在は文部科学省所管の独立行政法人。放射線による人体の障害に関する諸問題を，物理学，化学，生物学，医学などの広範な分野から総合的に追求するとともに，放射性同位体や各種放射線発生装置などを利用して癌をはじめとする疾病の診断や治療を行う技術について研究を行う。各種の研修コースを設け，放射線防護，放射線の医学利用などに関する技術者の養成訓練も行っている。所在地は，千葉県千葉市であり，茨城県ひたちなか市に那珂湊支所がある。千葉市には，放射線障害に関する動物実験を行うための施設・設備やサイクロトロンをはじめとする各種放射線発生装置などが備えられている。また重粒子医医科学センター病院があり臨床研究と重粒子線癌治療を行っている。ひたちなか市には，放射線物質の環境中での挙動に関する生態学的研究を行うための施設・設備がある。
