When the paper of a book bound in a closed binding is weak or damaged by insects, new paper is inserted between the pockets of the main text to reinforce it. To insert paper, the binding threads are first removed and the book is disassembled, then paper slightly larger than the original is inserted, and a cover of the same size is attached and the book is rebound. It is said to have developed mainly in China, where waste paper is sometimes used for the inserted paper, which is said to have led to the discovery of rare documents. Similarly, the book is disassembled, each leaf is spread out, and thin, flexible paper is glued to the backside before being rebound, which is called "backing," but because glue is used, care must be taken to prevent insect damage.
