A Jesuit from Veracruz, Mexico. After studying at a school run by the Jesuits, he joined the Jesuits and taught literature and philosophy at the San Ildefonso College in Mexico City. As a result of the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767, he traveled to Italy and settled in Bologna, where he wrote "Ancient History of Mexico" (1780-81, published in Italian). In philosophy, he was familiar with Descartes and Leibniz, and is considered one of the intellectual pioneers of Mexican independence. [Kobayashi Kazuhiro]
