Year of death: Unknown (Year of death unknown) Year of birth: 1311 He was the son of Emperor Go-Daigo, and his mother was the daughter of Nijō Tameyo. He first entered Myoho-in Temple, became a monk, took the name Sonjō Hoshinnō, and succeeded the head priest of the same temple, and later became the head priest of Tendai. When his father the emperor began his anti-shogunate activities, he joined him, and after the Genkō Incident (1331), he was exiled to Sanuki (Kagawa Prefecture) by the Kamakura shogunate. He returned to Kyoto during the Kenmu Restoration and resumed his position as head priest of Tendai, but when the Nanboku-chō civil war began, he returned to secular life, took the name Muneyoshi, and took charge of one of the military affairs of his father the emperor. He first went to Ise, and then to Ii Castle in Tōtōmi (Shizuoka Prefecture). He returned to Yoshino briefly, and in September 1338, he set out for the eastern provinces from Ise Ominato by ship with Kitabatake Chikafusa and others, but a typhoon swept the prince and his party ashore in Totomi, where they entered Ii Castle once again, and thereafter fought in Hokuriku and Kanto, with Shinano (Nagano Prefecture) at the center. As the power of the Southern Court declined, he was pushed back by the Ogasawara clan of Shinano, and retreated to the Ina region of the province, where he died around 1382/Kōwa 2 (1384) and 1384/Ganchū 1 (1385). During that time, he visited the Southern Court's temporary palace several times. He excelled in waka poetry, and in addition to the poetry anthology "Rikashu," he compiled "Shinyo Wakashu," a collection of waka poems by people connected to the Southern Court that was similar to an imperial anthology.
