It is a tall tree that can reach 20m in height, densely branching to form a cone-shaped tree, and the trunk is sometimes significantly twisted. There are two types of leaves: needle-like leaves arranged in three whorls or opposite crosses, and scale leaves arranged in opposite crosses. Most mature trees have scale leaves. It is dioecious and blooms at the ends of short branches in April. The male flowers are elliptical and yellow, with eight pairs of stamens arranged in opposite crosses. The female flowers are purple-green, with 3 to 4 pairs of scales arranged in opposite crosses, and ripen the following fall into spherical, purple-brown, berry-like fruits containing 2 to 4 brown seeds. …
