In the tradition of the incense arts, Sanjonishi Sanetaka, together with Shino Munenobu and Soami, is said to have been instrumental in the creation of the incense art. The style was passed down from Sanetaka to the generations of the Sanjonishi family and to court nobles such as Karasuma Mitsuhiro, and was passed down underground to the 10th generation head of the Hakuke Shinto Shirakawa family, Sarushima Tatewaki Ietane, and was called Sanjonishi-ryu or Oke-ryu (Figure a). In the Oke-ryu style, disciples who mastered the secrets of their master were given a certificate of Menkyo Kaiden, and those who obtained this certificate were able to pass on all of the secret teachings and rights of transmission to their own disciples, making it a complete transmission system that differed from the Iemoto system.
