Lysistrate - Onna no Heiwa (English)

A comedy by Aristophanes, an ancient Greek comic poet. It was performed in 411 BC. Twenty years after the outbreak of the Peloponnesian War, all hopes of peace had been dashed, and the Sicilian expedition (415-413 BC), which Athens had risked its national fate for, ended in a disastrous defeat. However, far from showing signs of ending the war, this play was written at a time when Athens was still on the path to ruin. Unable to bear the constant war, their husbands and sons going off to war, and the long days of having to defend their empty bedrooms, women, friend and foe alike, gathered under the command of Lysistra (the woman who disbands the army), and resolved to abstain from sex until the men stopped fighting. However, the men try to break the picket line, and some of the women also try to break the strike, but in the end this tactic works, and the men are forced to stop the war. In his earlier work, "Peace," Aristophanes sang of the idea that the realization of peace leads to sexual fulfillment, but here, on the contrary, he dreams of realizing a shift from war to peace by artificially creating a state of sexual hunger and deprivation.
