Born in Shanghai as the son of James William Lambuth (1830-92), who served as a missionary in China from 1854, he studied at Emory and Henry University and Vanderbilt University, and served as a missionary in Shanghai and Suzhou from 1877. In 1886, he was appointed Chief of the Japan Mission, and together with his father, he served in Kobe, Hiroshima, and Oita, establishing churches, and founded Hiroshima Eiwa Girls' School and Kwansei Gakuin (Kwansei Gakuin University). …
