Substances produced intermediately in the manufacturing process that starts from raw materials and ends with the final dye product. Also called dye intermediates. For example, in the case of the acid dye Orange II, benzene and naphthalene are used as starting materials, and are produced through unit operations such as nitration, amination, sulfonation, hydroxylation, and diazotization to produce diazobenzenesulfonic acid and β-naphthol, which are finally coupled to produce the dye (Figure). Nitrobenzene, aniline, sulfanilic acid, β-naphthalenesulfonic acid, and β-naphthol produced intermediately through unit operations in this way are dye intermediates.

原料から出発して最終製品の染料に至る製造工程の中間につくられる物質。染料中間物ともいう。一例として酸性染料のオレンジIIを例にとると，ベンゼンおよびナフタレンを出発原料として，それぞれニトロ化，アミノ化，スルホン化，ヒドロキシル化，ジアゾ化などの単位操作を経てジアゾベンゼンスルホン酸およびβ‐ナフトールがつくられ，最終的に2者をカップリングして染料が生成する(図)。このように単位操作により中間につくられるニトロベンゼン，アニリン，スルファニル酸，β‐ナフタレンスルホン酸，β‐ナフトールなどは染料中間体である。
