A Rinzai sect monk in the mid-Muromachi period. A representative Gozan literary monk. He was called Gaunsanjin, Kokuchoshi, etc. He was from Sakai in Izumi (Osaka prefecture). He attended and inherited the teachings of Mukyu Shushin at Shokoku-ji Temple. After Mukyu's death, he studied under Genchu Shugaku (1359-1428), Tensho Choiku (1379-?), and Ishou Tokugan, learning about Gozan literature, while also living at Toji Temple and Shokoku Temple, and demonstrating his political talents, such as mediating the Uesugi Zenshu (Ujinori) Rebellion (1416-1417) and leading the Zen world as Sorokushi three times. He was particularly known for his contributions to the consolidation of the Gozan learning and arts since Gido Shushin and Zekkaichishin. He passed away on June 24, 1272, at the age of 83. He was given the posthumous title of Zen Master Koshu Meikyou by imperial decree. In addition to the 200 volumes of the abridged texts "Kokukozo," he produced many other works, including the daily record "Gaun Nikkenroku," the collection of diplomatic documents "Zenrin Kokuhoki," and the anthologies of poetry and prose "Gaunkou" and "Chikugoshu." His disciples included such literary monks as Yokokawa, Menkoku (1405-1472), and Togen (1430-1489). [D.T.
