Zuikei Shuho

A Rinzai sect monk in the mid-Muromachi period. A representative Gozan literary monk. He was called Gaunsanjin, Kokuchoshi, etc. He was from Sakai in Izumi (Osaka prefecture). He attended and inherited the teachings of Mukyu Shushin at Shokoku-ji Temple. After Mukyu's death, he studied under Genchu ​​Shugaku (1359-1428), Tensho Choiku (1379-?), and Ishou Tokugan, learning about Gozan literature, while also living at Toji Temple and Shokoku Temple, and demonstrating his political talents, such as mediating the Uesugi Zenshu (Ujinori) Rebellion (1416-1417) and leading the Zen world as Sorokushi three times. He was particularly known for his contributions to the consolidation of the Gozan learning and arts since Gido Shushin and Zekkaichishin. He passed away on June 24, 1272, at the age of 83. He was given the posthumous title of Zen Master Koshu Meikyou by imperial decree. In addition to the 200 volumes of the abridged texts "Kokukozo," he produced many other works, including the daily record "Gaun Nikkenroku," the collection of diplomatic documents "Zenrin Kokuhoki," and the anthologies of poetry and prose "Gaunkou" and "Chikugoshu." His disciples included such literary monks as Yokokawa, Menkoku (1405-1472), and Togen (1430-1489).

室町中期の臨済(りんざい)宗の僧。代表的五山文学僧。臥雲山人(がうんさんじん)、刻楮子(こくちょし)などと称した。和泉(いずみ)(大阪府)の堺(さかい)の人。相国(しょうこく)寺の無求周伸(むきゅうしゅうしん)に参じ、その法を嗣(つ)いだ。無求の寂後、厳中周噩(げんちゅうしゅうがく)(1359―1428)、天章澄彧(てんしょうちょういく)(1379―?)、惟肖得巌(いしょうとくがん)らに師事し、五山文学を学ぶ一方、等持(とうじ)寺、相国寺に住し、上杉禅秀(ぜんしゅう)(氏憲(うじのり))の乱(1416~1417)の調停や、三たび僧録司(そうろくし)に任じて禅宗界を統率するなど、政治的才腕を振るった。とくに義堂周信(ぎどうしゅうしん)、絶海中津(ぜっかいちゅうしん)以来の五山学芸を集大成した功績は大きい。文明(ぶんめい)5年6月24日、83歳で示寂。興宗明教(こうしゅうめいきょう)禅師と勅諡(ちょくし)された。抄物(しょうもの)『刻楮』200巻のほか、日録『臥雲日件録(がうんにっけんろく)』、外交文書の作例集『善隣国宝記(ぜんりんこくほうき)』、詩文集『臥雲稿(がうんこう)』『竹郷集(ちくごうしゅう)』など多数。門下からは横川(おうせん)、綿谷(めんこく)(1405―1472)、桃源(とうげん)(1430―1489)などの文学僧が輩出した。
