(1) A modern British political party, the Whig. Organized around 1679 by anti-royalists who opposed the succession of the Catholic James (later King II) to the throne. Supported mainly by urban merchants and industrialists and nonconformists, it came into conflict with the Tories. It developed after the Glorious Revolution and reached its zenith under the leadership of Walpole during the Hanoverian period. It split and declined in the second half of the 18th century, but after the Industrial Revolution it advocated liberal reforms and developed into the Liberal Party. (2) A political party during the early years of the founding of the United States. A force formed in opposition to Jackson and the Democratic Party in the early 1830s. The National Republican Party was at the center of the Whig, and it was led by H. Clay and D. Webster. It won the presidential elections of 1840 and 1848, but disappeared during the party reorganization in the mid-1850s. → Related articles Edinburgh Review | Grote | Shaftesbury | Swift Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
