Pázmány Péter

Hungarian Counter-Reformationist. Born into a Protestant family, he converted to Catholicism and then joined the Society of Jesus. After teaching at the University of Graz for nearly ten years, he became Archbishop of Esztergom in 1616, and in 1635 founded a university in Nagyszombat (which moved to Pest in the 18th century and became the forerunner of the University of Budapest; from 1922 to 1949 it was called Pázmagne Peter University). Politically he was pro-Habsburg. He built the foundations of Catholic culture in Hungary through his prolific writings, including treatises and sermons.

ハンガリーの反宗教改革家。プロテスタントの家に生まれるが，カトリックに改宗し，さらにイエズス会に入る。グラーツの大学で10年近く教えたのち，1616年にエステルゴム大司教となり，35年にはナジソンバトに大学を設立(同大学は18世紀にはペシュトへ移り，ブダペスト大学の前身となる。1922‐49年にはパーズマーニュ･ペーテル大学とよばれた)。政治的には親ハプスブルクであった。論文，説教書など精力的な著作活動によって，ハンガリーのカトリック文化の基礎をつくった。
