1570‐1637 Hungarian Counter-Reformationist. Born into a Protestant family, he converted to Catholicism and then joined the Society of Jesus. After teaching at the University of Graz for nearly ten years, he became Archbishop of Esztergom in 1616, and in 1635 founded a university in Nagyszombat (which moved to Pest in the 18th century and became the forerunner of the University of Budapest; from 1922 to 1949 it was called Pázmagne Peter University). Politically he was pro-Habsburg. He built the foundations of Catholic culture in Hungary through his prolific writings, including treatises and sermons.
