...There are various theories about the origin of fado, including that it came from sailor songs, prisoner songs, certain folk songs, or was brought from Brazil or Africa. Musicologically and historically, the most likely is that the modinha, an urbane, sentimental song that was popular in Portugal and Brazil around 1800, and the light-hearted dance song lundú contributed to the formation of this genre. Although the word fado means "fate" or "destiny," these songs about the lives of the Lisbon people are usually sad and lyrical.

In Brazil, a dance music called lundú was created in the 18th century, and was initially criticized by the upper and middle classes as vulgar, but it was eventually refined and transformed into an urban song form. There is also a theory that lundú was brought to Peru by slaves from Africa before Brazil.
