1836‐95 Austrian novelist. Born in Lemberg, Galicia (now Lvov, Ukraine) under the Austro-Hungarian Empire, he died in Lindheim, Hesse. He studied history at the universities of Prague and Graz, and became a lecturer in history at the University of Graz at the tender age of 20, but soon abandoned his academic career to devote himself to his writing career. He wrote many stories, mainly on the themes of the peasants and Jews of his native Galicia. His signature work, Venus in Furs (1870), depicts the sexual deviation of S. Krzyemski, a young man whose lover Wanda has been stolen by a handsome man calling himself "the Greek," but who finds pleasure in the pain of serving them as a servant.
