Cephalic index

Japanese: 頭示数 - とうしすう（英語表記）cephalic index

An index used to show variation in the shape of the braincase. There are the head length-width index and the head length-height index, but the most commonly used is the head length-width index (head width x 100 ÷ head length) devised by A. Retzius in 1840. This index is used to classify people into dolichocephalic, mesencephalic, brachycephalic, etc. It was once used as an important indicator for racial classification, but recent studies of twins and other subjects have revealed that it does not have much genetic support.

脳頭蓋の形態の変異を示すための示数。頭長幅示数，頭長高示数などがあるが，一般には 1840年に，A.レツィウスが考案した頭長幅示数 (頭幅× 100÷頭長) をさすことが多い。この示数によって長頭，中頭，短頭などに分類される。かつては人種分類の重要な示標として用いられていたが，近来，双生児などの調査によって，遺伝的な裏づけはあまりないことが明らかになった。
