〘Noun〙 ( Gairou is a Chinese official title, meaning an employee outside the regular staff. "Ui" is the pronunciation in the Tang and Song dynasties) 1. A family name established by the descendants of Chin Zongkei, a Yuan Dynasty official in the Ministry of Rites who naturalized in Japan during the Muromachi period. Their business has been medicine for generations. *Shiji Sho (1477), vol. 5 "There must have been a pharmacy in Japan called Gairou in any generation." 2. A pill that became a specialty of Odawara after the Gairou family presented one to Hojo Ujitsuna. It was mainly used for digestive disorders, but it also has efficacious effects such as clearing phlegm and eliminating bad breath, and is said to have been used as an emergency medicine on the battlefield. It is also called Tochinkou after courtiers placed them in their crowns and highly valued them. Gairou medicine. Gairou candy. 〘名〙 (外郎(がいろう)は中国の官名、定員外の職員の意。「うい」は唐宋音)① 元の礼部員外郎で、室町時代日本に帰化した陳宗敬の子孫の立てた家名。代々医薬を業とした。※史記抄(1477)五「日本に外郎と云薬屋こそいづれの代の外郎であたやらう」② 外郎家が北条氏綱に献じてから小田原の名物となった丸薬。主に消化器疾患に用いられるが、痰(たん)切りや口臭を消すなどの効能もあり、また戦陣の救急薬ともしたという。殿上人が冠の中に入れて珍重したところから透頂香(とうちんこう)とも。外郎薬。外郎飴。痰切飴(たんきりあめ)。※教言卿記‐応永一五年(1408)一一月晦日「潤体円〈三粒〉、唐人〈ういらう〉云々。定秋に申也」③ 「ういろうもち(外郎餠)」の略。〔和漢三才図会(1712)〕④ 「ういろううり(外郎売)」の略。※歌舞伎・助六廓夜桜(1779)「いつもの外郎(ウヰラウ)は、もう見えさうなものぢゃわいなア」⑤ 疱瘡(ほうそう)の一種。かさぶたが外郎薬に似ているところからいう。※談義本・八景聞取法問(1754)一「外郎(ウヰラウ)松皮の類自今急度(きっと)相止、蜀黍(とうもろこし)一通りにて仕候事」
