...The town's raznotsintsy (miscellaneous intelligentsia) also began performing amateur plays. Seeing this, Empress Elizaveta Petrovna invited the amateur theater troupe Fyodor Grigor'evich Volkov (1729-63) from Yaroslavl to St. Petersburg, where they trained under the playwright Sumarokov. In 1756, she built a permanent theater for the purpose and launched Russia's first professional theater troupe.
