Rain that is colored or mixed with foreign matter. Rain mixed with soil and sand is called muddy rain. In Japan, yellow sand is often the cause, and leaves gray or yellowish brown marks on tree leaves after the rain. When soot or substances blown into the air by fires or explosions dissolve in the rainwater, the rain turns black. This is called black rain. During the pine flowering season, yellow pollen carried by the wind falls mixed with the rain and sometimes floats in puddles, and is also called sulfur rain. When foreign matter falls alone, it can also be called mysterious rain. Although it is a rare phenomenon, there are quite a few records of small animals such as fish, frogs, and ants, as well as nuts, grains, and dead grass falling. In one example of fish rain, a large number of live fish about 10 centimeters deep fell from a black cloud in New York on the afternoon of May 15, 1900. In such cases, most of the rain is likely to have been sucked up by a tornado. This type of strange rain often accompanies sudden phenomena such as thunderstorms or heavy rain.
