Grand Canyon (English spelling)

A large canyon in the middle reaches of the Colorado River in the southwestern United States. Located in northwestern Arizona, the surrounding area was designated Grand Canyon National Park (area 2,726 km2) in 1919. The canyon was carved into the Colorado Plateau by the Colorado River, and in some places the valley is more than 1,600 m deep. The cliffs with numerous terraces continue for more than 400 km, creating an extraordinary landscape. The strata of the canyon walls are almost horizontal, with the lowest part consisting of the oldest Archean strata and the uppermost Cenozoic strata. The strata vary in color, but because it is an arid region, the overall color is reddish.

アメリカ合衆国南西部，コロラド川中流部の大峡谷。アリゾナ州北西部にあり，付近一帯は1919年指定のグランド･キャニオン国立公園(面積2726km2)。コロラド川がコロラド高原を刻んだ峡谷で，谷の深さが1600m以上に達するところもある。多くの段丘をもつ絶壁が400km以上にわたって連続し異様な景観をなす。谷壁の地層はほぼ水平で，最下部は最古の始生代，最上部は新生代の地層からなる。地層の色彩はさまざまだが，乾燥地域のため全体としては赤みを帯びている。
