...Since the apostolic age, miracles have often been regarded as divine guarantees of the holiness of saints, and church law provides for procedures for verifying the authenticity of miracles. The most famous miracle in modern times is the appearance of the Virgin Mary to the young girl Bernadette in Lourdes, southern France, in 1858, and her healing of an incurable disease by a spring that gushed forth at the place of the appearance. A permanent medical office has been investigating the matter since 1882, but the path to rigorous scientific research was opened in 1903 by A. Carrel (Nobel Prize winner in Medicine in 1912), who visited Lourdes as a physician for a pilgrim group and witnessed the miraculous healing of a dying patient whom he examined himself. ...
