Torinoko paper - Torinoko paper

Japanese:
Torinoko paper - Torinoko paper
A type of washi paper. It is also called Torinoko because of its smooth surface and pale yellow luster like a chicken egg. It is a high-quality paper made mainly from gampi (a type of ganpi) and mixed with kozo (paper mulberry). It is available in thick and thin varieties. The theory that it originated in Toriko Village, Naka County, Hitachi Province, is probably a later addition. It was widely used from the Northern and Southern Courts period to the Muromachi period, and was used for short strips of paper, folding screens, sliding door paper, kanjincho (a type of book with a kanji character for a kanji character), and other elaborately designed books. Since thick paper could be copied on both sides, it was used for books bound in a sticky leaf binding style (→ sticky leaf binding) rather than the common bag-bound style. Later, Mitsumata (a type of mitsumata) was used, and this continues to the present day. Tsuruga in Echizen Province and Nashio in Settsu Province were known as famous production areas.
