Benjamin - Walter Benjamin

German literary critic and thinker. Born in Berlin as the son of a Jewish businessman. Influenced by Hebrew thought and German idealism in his youth, he later drew closer to Marxist thought. He was friends with G. Scholem, E. Bloch, Brecht, and Adorno. In 1933, he fled to Paris, and eventually became a researcher at the Frankfurt Institute for Sociology (then based in Geneva, then moved to New York). After the fall of Paris, he committed suicide by taking poison in a small village in the Pyrenees while fleeing the Nazis. His works are written in a sophisticated style rooted in a unique philosophy of language and history, and are filled with a keen sensitivity to the details of the subject. In addition to his main work, "The Origin of German Tragedy" (1928), he has written many other works that are representative of German critical literature, such as "One-Way Street" (1928).

ドイツの文芸批評家、思想家。ユダヤ系実業家の子としてベルリンに生まれる。青年期にヘブライ思想とドイツ観念論の影響を受け、のちにマルクス主義思想にも接近した。G・ショーレム、E・ブロッホ、ブレヒト、アドルノらと交友。1933年パリに亡命、やがてフランクフルト社会学研究所（当時、在ジュネーブ、ついでニューヨークに移る）の研究員となる。パリ陥落の後、ナチスの手を逃れる旅の途上、ピレネー山中の小村にて服毒自殺。その作品は、特異な言語哲学と歴史哲学に根ざしつつ精緻(せいち)な文体をもって書かれ、対象の細部に対する鋭敏な感性をみなぎらせている。主著『ドイツ悲劇の根源』（1928）のほか、『一方通行路』（1928）などドイツ批評文学を代表する多数の著作がある。
