A biennial herb of the Asteraceae family whose leaves are eaten raw. Botanically, lettuce, which has long been cultivated in Japan, and head lettuce, which is now widely used as a Western vegetable in salads, are the same species, and were cultivated in the eastern Mediterranean region. In Japan, lettuce varieties that have weak head formation and whose heads do not completely close together are called lettuce lettuce, and are distinguished from regular head lettuce, which has strong head formation. Lettuce was introduced to Japan during the Meiji and Taisho eras, but consumption has not increased as much as regular head lettuce. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
