Divided writing - Wakachigaki

Japanese: 分ち書き - わかちがき

In orthography, a certain unit (split-word unit) is set with spaces between it to make it easier to read. The unit may differ depending on the language, the script used, and even on the standpoint within each. In English, German, and other languages, each word is written separately, but in Korean, auxiliary words such as particles are written attached to an independent word. In Japanese, split-word writing is not generally used, but the combination of kanji and kana has a visual effect equivalent to split-word writing to a certain extent. Split-word writing becomes an issue in Japanese when it is necessary to write it in kana or romanized text, and although several methods have been proposed, it cannot be said that they are established as orthography.

正書法において，読みやすさへの考慮として，一定の単位 (分ち書き単位) を設定して，その間に空白を設けること。その単位は，言語により，用いる文字により，さらにそのなかでも立場により異なりうる。英語，ドイツ語などでは，単語ごとに分けて書くが，朝鮮語では助詞のような付属語は自立語につけて書かれる。日本語では一般に分ち書きを行わないが，漢字とかなの組合せが，視覚上，ある程度分ち書きに相当する効果をもつ。日本語で分ち書きが問題となるのは，かな文字文やローマ字文でこれを表記する必要の出てきたときで，これまでいくつかの方式が提案されているが，正書法として確立しているとはいえない。
